Rhone

Like Beaujolais, the Appellation of Côtes du Rhône represents a veritable ocean of wine: 105,000 acres of vineyards produce, on average, 280 million bottles a year! Two-thirds of this is drunk by the French as their day-to-day wine, while most of the remaining third is exported to other European countries. Above the general category of Côtes du Rhône, in the appellation hierarchy, exists the Côtes du Rhône Villages (also an appellation controlée), where all the wine comes from one village only (similar to the Beaujolais Villages). The top of the quality scale is made up of the Côtes du Rhône Domaines. These wineries are authorized to put the name of their estate on the label certifying that all the grapes used in the wine come from a single property.

Because of the very favorable climatic conditions the area enjoys and the complex blending of multiple grape varietals, a Côtes du Rhône can represent a fantastic bargain. These wines are based on the dark and peppery Grenache grape with smaller amounts of the smoky, spicy Syrah, the blackberry-flavored Mourvèdre, and the full-bodied Cinsault grapes added to the blend. The vast majority of Côtes du Rhône wines come from large producers or brands that buy grapes from many different growers of varying quality. The best wines, however, come from small producers like Domaine des Coteaux des Travers with vineyards in the better villages like Rasteau, Cairanne, and Beaumes-de-Venise.
